Old School Monsters

I am running with 5E superheros as PC's, so I am going to use the Monster Manual stat block from 5E as well. In this post I am just going ask any 5E Dungeon Masters to give the old school monster feel a try.

During one of my games, I pre rolled a Goblin encounter from the number appearing recommendation in OSE. The total came out to 30+. My players had never seen anything on such a scale. They were excavating a recently uncovered tomb, but after returning from town, the tomb had been overrun with the goblin army. This encounter would have surely resulted in a TPK if tackled head on. The players knew this, and it provided them with a situation to take the gaming outside of the character sheet. They had to recon and gameplan ahead of time. They still ended up in a TPK situation, but I used that as an opportunity to funnel them into Keep on the Borderlands.

Shifting gears here a bit, Gray Ooze in 5E is totally overwhelming when compared to its OSE counterpart. Having an ooze destroy your armor, may sound brutal, but most things are supposed to be. The minor inconvenience it causes in 5E is very lackluster. This is just one example of many, where monsters have had their teeth taken from them.

Lastly, I would encourage anyone running a 5E game to pick up OSE and compare monsters.. You might find something completely different and maybe something better.

Give your players a challenge in a different way
